It’s Monday, our last full day in New York. It’s hard to believe that tomorrow morning we head home.
It has been a jam-packed three days. We’ve taken the subway to Bronx, visited Yankee Stadium and the Botanical Gardens, managed to miss a bus stop and ended up deeper in the Bronx than we thought.
We took a cruise around Manhattan, saw new towers rising, got up close to the Statue of Liberty, visited the 9/11 Memorial. Even after all these years and being in a place of serenity and reflection, the images of horror were front and center in my mind.
SoHo, NoHo, Union Square, Time Square, sitting on the R line, patiently waiting as delays caused by a track fire and then when the waiting got to long, hopped off early and walked.
Entertainment options from the silly like Ripleys Believe it or Not to the Lion King and Rent. We were privileged to be there for Rent’s closing night. Incredibly powerful story shared by people with powerful voices and amazing talent.
And along the way, we’ve met some wonderful people. The gentleman in the Bronx who saw our confusion as we tried to find the Bx12 stop and instead of walking by, stopped and offered to help. The two kind ladies who directed us to the right bus stop to get back to where we needed to be after we missed a stop … the list could go on.
We have barely scratched the surface of what New York has to offer. We are going to get as much in today as we can, but there are areas that we simply will not get to this time.
What this trip has done is help me realize how much fun and excitement I miss in my own back yard. There are attractions, local hot spots and great theatre back home and too often, I don’t make the time to be a hometown tourist.
While the necessity to work, to earn money, and to pay the bills won’t go away, I’ve decided not to wait until the next big trip to be a tourist. In between, I’m going to be sure I’ve done more than scratch the surface of all that Winnipeg and Manitoba has to offer as well. There are wonderful opportunities right under our nose.
What fabulous adventure awaits you just around the corner?
