I’d like you to try something. Set your timer to 30 seconds and start writing down all the things about yourself that you’d like to change. After that, reset your timer and write down all the things about yourself that you like and are proud of.
Which list is longer? And which list was harder to write?
There is a commercial on right now that makes me smile each and every time I see it. Little Jessica is in front of a mirror, starting her day by listing all the things and people (including herself!) that she likes. She ends her morning affirmation by saying “I can do anything good…”.
How much better and stress free would our lives be if, instead of focusing on all the ways we need to improve and all the things in our lives we don’t like, we took the time to pat ourselves on the back and recognize our talents, our skills and our abilities. I’m not suggesting that you should give up on personal and professional goals. Go for it! Just don’t forget to congratulate and reward yourself.
Now go back and finish that list of all the things about yourself that you like and the accomplishments that you are proud of. Then put it up somewhere so that the next time you are struggling with a challenging situation at work or in your personal life, you can remind yourself of just how great you are … and that you can do anything good!
